Marriage, Divorce And The Bride Of Christ

In Mark chapter 10, we come upon a scene of Jesus as he traveled about the Holy Lands, teaching the people the truth of God's Word. As He went about His way, He was approached by the Pharisees. They wanted to trap Him in His comments about certain laws. In this case, they asked if it was lawful for a man to divorce a woman.

Jesus first wanted to establish the position of the Law of Moses.

"And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?"

"And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put [her] away."

"And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept." Mark 10:3-5

Jesus has basically told the Pharisees that Moses gave you a way to do it, but it only goes so far...and it was only because the people were so cold of heart that they demanded something from Moses concerning this.

Jesus continues to make clear how God views a marriage:

"But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." Mark 10:6-9

Jesus shows that, first off, marriage is strictly a "one man+one woman" thing. There is no room for wiggle on this fact. Same sex marriages, polygamous marriages and such are wrong.

Next, we see that there should be a separate, independant aspect to the marriage. It is an event that causes the ties of childhood to be broken, and new ties of adulthood to be formed between the husband and wife.

We see next that the two are no longer two in God's eyes (as considered from the aspect of the flesh.) They have become so close, so much a part of each other, that they are considered one body until death splits the union. Spiritually, they are still individuals. This is an important fact, as will be shown shortly.

The final point Jesus makes is that what God has put together, no man should try to put away. You see, when Moses said that a Bill of Divorcement could be issued, he was showing that you could separate physically, but that the joining of the flesh from God's point of view was never parted. Sure, they could go away, start new paths and new lives. But, they would remain joined by God until death. It is a shame, but the Pharisees, over time, perverted this into something that God did not say nor want. The divorcement of today, known as "The Get", allows for remarriage. This is against God's intention.

Even in cases where divorce is authorized, such as cases of fornication, one still has to consider the words of Jesus, "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

Marriage is, on one hand, a method of man joining with his helpmeet. But, on the other hand, it is a type of what is/was/will be between the Savior and the Church.

When the Bride of Christ and the Lord Jesus are joined together, it will be a marriage of both a physical and spiritual nature. And, it will be until death do they part...except, there will be no death! The two will be seen as one in God's eyes, as they have been since before the world was made, and they will be until the end of that which never ends. The engagement has already been made. We are just awaiting the day of the wedding itself. And that is getting closer each and every day!

Grace and Peace....
